Water-color. This large violet Spinel suggests a royal past. For centuries, only nobility wore the color purple, because the dye to make it was so rare and expensive. In ancient Persia, Greece and Rome, garments were dyed purple using the liquid squeezed from a mollusk called the Murex. The dye from these squeezings was so rare that the mollusks were not killed in the process-- they were too valuable! This purple Spinel is equally rare, in a stately oval cut fit for an empress.
