Tourmaline is often collected in vibrant greens, juicy pinks, and specimens which contain both shades in the variety known as “Watermelon Tourmaline.”  One of the birthstones for October, in the 1500s Portuguese explorers in Brazil confused these gems with Emeralds and Sapphires. Tourmaline was not correctly identified until 1793.
